Welcome to West Lake MUN
This year, our conference’s theme is “Time is Ticking.” The industrial revolution, that occurred during the 18th and 19th centuries, has evolved our species and ways of living greatly, however, at a cost—our planet’s health.
The excessive burning of fossil fuels, increase of greenhouse gases in our environment’s air, rising rates of deforestation, are all reasons why Earth, and consequently we, are suffering. It has caused such extreme fluctuations in the temperature that water supplies are shrinking, forests are burning out, and coral reefs are dying. Since the industrial revolution, the average temperatures of the world have increased by 1˚C, causing heatwaves, floods, droughts, all over the world, and will continue to rise if nothing is done about it.
An iceberg in the arctic ocean, twice the size of New York city, contains a crack that is rapidly increasing due to warmer climates and is estimated by NASA to soon break off, completely submerging in the sea water.
However, climate change is not the only critical issue that is currently liable to destroy Earth – pollution is equally a culprit. Children are dying due to toxins in the air, bees are near extinction due to crop contamination (excess use of pesticides), plastic is destroying and ending the life of sea animals at an alarming rate, and the list goes on.
Climate change and pollution have become so much a part of daily life that today, we often fail to appreciate the magnitude of these issues. Our mission at West Lake MUN this year is to make civilians aware of these issues and their grave impacts on our environment, because, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is a progress; working together is a success.”
We need to work together and save our planet, because, after all, time is ticking.
...until West Lake MUN 2019
